Over 8,000 KT employees apply for voluntary retirement
South Korean communications carrier KT has seen over 8,000 employees apply for voluntary retirement, Yonhap reported. The company launched a voluntary retirement scheme earlier this month to reduce the headcount and cut costs. Some 8,320 employees applied for the programme, well over the anticipated number of 6,000.

South Korean operator KT may seek to reform and unite the company with its affiliates and subsidiaries, the Korean Times reports. KT CEO Hwang Chang-gyu had a meeting with the presidents and CEOs of all KT's affiliates on 17 April, according to the report. The company has been affected by a series of fraud and information leak cases. The executive took office last December, after replacing Lee Suk-chae.

KCC, operators agree on registration stop policy

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) has reached an agreement with South Korea's three mobile network operators on a shutdown of customer registration systems. The policy would automatically shut down an operator's customer registration system if one of the operators gets more than 30,000 new customer registrations in one day or gets more than 24,000 customers for two days in a row, the JoongAng Daily reports. The former head of South Korean operator KT Lee Suk-chae was indicted on alleged embezzlement, Yonhap News reports. KT to raise USD 1 bln in bond sale

South Korean communications provider KT plans to raise USD 1 billion through a bond sale to overseas investors, Yonhap reports. The company will offer three-year bonds in the amount of USD 650 million, which will carry an interest rate of 100 basis points above the yield on three-year US Treasury bonds, and USD 350 million in five-year bonds, which will carry an interest rate of 110 basis points higher than similar US Treasury bonds. KT plans to use the proceeds to repay maturing debts.

KT gains 5,000 broadband subs in March

South Korean communications carrier KT gained 5,000 broadband subscribers in March, turning around two months of losses. The company ended the month with 8.04 million broadband customers. The telephony base slipped by 81,000 to 17.79 million as the PSTN base fell by 80,000 to 14.31 million and the VoIP base narrowed by 1,000 subscribers to 3.48 million. KT also ended March with 5.16 million IPTV subscribers, after adding 75,000 new customers in the month.

Antitrust body fines KT for annuling contract with Enspert

The South Korean antitrust agency has fined operator KT KRW 2.08 billion for irregularities in a contract with local electronics manufacturer Enspert, the Korean Herald reported. In 2010, KT placed orders for 200,000 units with an initial production of 30,000 units of a low-end tablet PC, dubbed K-PAD. However, in 2011, KT decided to annul the remaining orders, arguing that Enspert had failed to resolve defects in the device.
