Pakistan raises USD 30 mln in auction of 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz spectrum in AJK & GB

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has concluded its spectrum auction for 1800 MHz spectrum in the regions Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K) and Gilgit Baltistan (GB).  

Zong won 10 MHz (2 blocks of 5 MHz) in the 1800 MHz band for the price of USD 14.398 million. This represents 85 percent of the total spectrum offered in the 1800 MHz band for AJ&K and GB. Telenor, Ufone and Zong also won 1.2 MHz of spectrum each in the 1800 MHz band, and Telenor Pakistan won 15 MHz of spectrum in the 2100 MHz band for the base price.

The spectrum sold in the 2100 MHz band represents 50 percent of the total offered spectrum in this band. Total revenue generated from this spectrum auction process in AJK & GB tops USD 30 million.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said a fault in one of the international submarine cables was reported in the sea near Karachi affecting some internet traffic in peak hours. However, alternate arrangements to provide uninterrupted internet services to users have been made by relevant service providers through obtaining additional bandwidth and capacity to meet the requirements.

Pakistani operator Ufone reports it has secured its largest syndicated financing facility jointly led by MCB Bank, Allied Bank, Bank of Punjab, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), and United Bank Limited (UBL) to fund the acquisition and rollout of its 4G services across Pakistan. Ufone has recently won a 4G spectrum license in the spectrum auction held by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Telenor's total revenues in Pakistan increased to NOK 1.42 billion in the third quarter of 2021, from NOK 1.38 billion in the year-earlier period. Subscription and traffic revenues increased by 7 percent, mainly due to subscriber growth and healthy monetisation on the increased data usage, parent company Telenor said.

Jazz secures mobile license renewal in Pakistan

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has renewed Jazz's mobile license due for renewal since 2019, following the dismissal of a petition by Islamabad High Court, local newspaper The News reports, citing a PTA statement. The renewed license includes enhanced terms and conditions for coverage and quality of service, as established during the recent spectrum auction held bu the government of Pakistan. The license was renewed for PKR 449.2 million, of which Jazz has already paid PKR 333.64 million.

Ufone secures 1800 MHz spectrum license in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) announced it will grant a spectrum license to mobile operator Ufone for USD 279 million (excluding advance tax). The government will receive 50 percent upfront payment of PKR 23.44 billion within 15 days. The PTA also reports that Ufone has already paid 20 percent of this amount of PKR 9.38 billion on 9 September. Fifty percent of the total amount will be paid in 5 equal annual installments, the PTA added.

Pakistan starts 1800, 2100 MHz spectrum auction

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is inviting applications from Pakistani and foreign bidders for its auction of spectrum in 1800 and 2100 MHz bands. The government hopes to raise around USD 1 billion from this spectrum auction, local newspaper Dawn reports. The new spectrum will be used for provision of phone and broadband services on the local market in the Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) areas.

Pakistan selects Frontier as consultant for 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz spectrum auction

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reports it has completed the evaluation process for the selection of an international consultant for spectrum auction of 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz bands. PTA says it has received 12 bids for this project from consultants and consultancy firms. After evaluating all 12 financial bids, the PTA selected Frontier Economics as consultant for the 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz spectrum auction.

The move comes amid a report from Reuters saying the government hopes to raise around USD 1 billion through the sale of unused telecom spectrum and that it has started preparations for that auction. The tender for consultants will run until the end of October.

The Pakistani government has decided to auction additional spectrum for mobile broadband services and network expansion across the country, local newspaper Business Recorder reports, citing Secretary Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui. According to Siddiqui, the government had made available ample spectrum and decided to auction it.
