Parliament votes against sending ACTA to Court of Justice

The European Parliament has decided against asking the Court of Justice for an opinion on the multilateral Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. The European Commission earlier recommended the EU seek the court's opinion, in order to ensure the treaty is in line with EU law. The parliament's International Trade Committee has now voted against sending the treaty to the court, as the process could then drag out for several years. The Council of Ministers has already approved the ACTA, and the parliament is now expected to vote in June. The Trade Committee will give its recommendation on whether to approve the treaty at a vote in late May.
