Peru approves USD 90 mln Amazon broadband project

Peru's transport and communications ministry (MTC) has approved a project to bring high-speed broadband connectivity to the country’s isolated jungle areas that aren’t covered by existing tender processes. The project aims to connect 48,000 inhabitants in 247 localities in the Napo, Putumayo, Huallaga, Maranon and Amazonas river basins at a cost of PEN 306 million (around USD 93 million).

Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversion will soon be launching the tender process to carry out the project, said the MTC, adding that 280 schools, 36 healthcare centres and 3 police stations will also be connected to either wireless or fibre-optic broadband networks.

Peru's transport and communications ministry (MTC) has announced plans to invest some PEN 1.25 billion, around 10 percent of its total budget, on rolling out telecommunications infrastructure throughout the country. Peru's transport and communications ministry (MTC) is set to launch a new tender worth over PEN 1.4 billion later this month to bring fibre-optic broadband to the regions of Ancash, Arequipa, Huanuco, La Libertad, Pasco and San Martin, reports local daily La Republica. Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversion has signed the contract to provide USD 69.4 million in funding from the country's universal services fund (Fitel) to America Movil to roll out broadband services in the Lima region. Under the terms of the contract awarded to the operator last December, America Movil will install a 1,797km network in the Lima region providing broadband access to some 185,000 users in 291 underserved localities as well as 477 public institutions.

Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversion has confirmed the award of 7 regional broadband tenders launched in September and requiring investments totalling around USD 300 million. GMC Conecta and Consorcio Telecomunicaciones Rurales del Peru were awarded the tenders to connect localities in the Amazonas, Ica, Junin, Moquegua, Puno and Tacno regions, while Claro (America Movil) was awarded the Lima project requiring an investment of around USD 137 million.
