Prysmian, Nokia, NICT achieve first 1 Petabit/s optical fibre speeds

Milan-listed cable maker Prysmian said its researchers have teamed up with Nokia Bell Labs in the US and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan to achieve a record-setting 1 Petabit per second transmission over optical fibre with standard dimensions. The researchers combined highly spectral efficient wideband optical transmission with an optical fibre guiding 15 spatial modes and the use of specific mode multiplexers to reach speeds that surpass all previous records in fibres with standard dimensions by 5.7 times, said Prysmian, adding that 1
