PT Portugal reaches 4 mln fibre homes passed, launches 1 Gbps service

PT Portugal has reached 4 million homes passed with its fibre network, equal to 66 percent of Portuguese homes, the company announced at a press conference in Lisbon. The Altice subsidiary also launched to promote its new offer of a broadband subscription at 1 Gbps, reports Jornal de Negocios. 

The service will be delivered with a new router developed in Portugal at Altice Labs in Aveiro. In addition to the gigabit connection, its supports 10x faster Wi-Fi than the previous model, at up to 1.73 Gbps, thanks to the 802.11ac Wave2 standard. 

The progress with the fibre roll-out puts the company on track to reach its goal of 5.3 million homes passed by 2020. Since the end of 2015, it has been adding around 75,000 to 85,000 each month. 

The new fibre packages will cost from EUR 44.99 four a double-play to EUR 83.99 per month for a quintuple-play with mobile voice and data. The new top speed is available to all customers, who pay EUR 40 for installation and EUR 4.99 per month for the router.

Altice Portugal will link six municipalities of the Serra da Estrela central massif (Seia, Covilha, Manteigas, Gouveia, Fundao and Oliveira do Hospital) and 100 parishes with optical fibre, as part of an investment worth several million euros. Meo comes first in Netflix ISP ranking in Portugal for September

Portugal Telecom's Meo unit ended September 2017 as the leader in the monthly Netflix ISP speed ranking for Portugal, with an average speed of 3.61 Mbps, compared with 3.30 Mbps the previous month. Cable operator Nowo, formerly Cabovisao, fell to second place with 3.52 Mbps, after a tie for first place in August at 3.30 Mbps. Nos came third with 3.47 Mbps (previously 3.07 Mbps), with Vodafone Portugal in fourth place at 3.14 Mbps (3.10 Mbps).

Nos launches 1 Gbps internet packages

Portuguese operator Nos has launched new internet packages with speeds up to 1 Gbps, matching the recent offer introduced by rival Portugal Telecom. The Nos 4 package with the new top speed costs EUR 73.99 per month and provides 1 Gbps download and 100 Mbps upload. In addition, customers benefit from a EUR 150 discount on the purchase of a smartphone and also get 176 TV channels, unlimited mobile calls and a 10 GB Sim card.

Portuguese subscribers to very high-speed broadband up 2.8% in Q2

There were 2.139 million homes in Portugal using very high-speed broadband services in the second quarter of 2017, up 2.8 percent on the previous quarter and 15.5 percent more than a year ago. That's equal to 52.4 percent of families, up from 51.0 percent at the end of March, according to the latest report by the National Communications Authority (Anacom)

PT Portugal revenues flat in Q2, EBITDA falls 8%

Altice saw a 0.1 percent annual growth in revenue for its operations in Portugal (PT Portugal/Meo) during the second quarter, to EUR 575.8 million. Adjusted EBITDA amounted to EUR 255.5 million, down 8.3 percent from a year ago, and the margin dropped to 44.4 percent.

PT to meet fibre expansion goal early - CEO

PT Portugal/Meo is likely to meet its goal of passing 5.3 million homes with fibre before the 2020 deadline. According to the president of PT Portugal, Paulo Neves, the fibre network could be extended to about 1 million homes this year, compared to 730,000 last year. By the end of the year, PT Portugal could have a total of 4 million homes with optical fibre. He was speaking a dinner-debate organised by the Portuguese Association for the Development of Communications (APDC).

Fibre overtakes cable in Portugal broadband market

There were around 3.42 million fixed internet access in Portugal at the end of the first quarter of 2017, or 44,000 more than in the previous quarter, reports the National Communications Authority (Anacom). Optical fibre surpassed cable modem as the main form of internet access in the fixed broadband segment, taking 34 percent of connections against 33.2 percent for cable. The remaining fixed broadband users had ADSL (25.2%) and LTE at a fixed location (7.5%).

Portugal Telecom is continuing with the expansion of its fibre-optic network and covered an additional 31,000 households. The new coverage is in Macedo de Cavaleiros (7,000 homes) in the district of Braganca; Sao Joao da Madeira (13,000) in the district of Aveiro; and Abrantes (11,000) in the district of Santarem. Residents have access to better image quality with HD content, an unlimited number of TVs with no need for set-top boxes and internet with guaranteed bandwidth as a result.
