Qualcomm acquires remaining interest in RF360 Holdings

Qualcomm completed the acquisition of the remaining interest in RF360 Holdings Singapore, a joint venture with TDK. Together with Qualcomm Technologies, the joint venture produced RF front-end (RFFE) filters which enable Qualcomm to provide complete 4G/5G RFFE products. 

With this acquisition, Qualcomm Technologies is able to provide customers a complete platform from modem to antenna, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF System, including the world's first commercial 5G NR sub-6 and mmWave products, integrating power amplifiers, filters, multiplexers, antenna tuning, LNAs, switching and envelope tracking products.

This acquisition is the final step to formally bring in-house more than 20 years of expertise in RFFE filtering. TDK Electronics' (formerly Epcos) remaining interest in the joint venture was valued at USD 1.15 billion in August. The total purchase price, including the initial investment, payments to TDK based on sales by the joint venture, and development obligations, will be approximately USD 3.1 billion.

Nevertheless, earnings fell less than the company's guidance, to USD 0.74 from USD 1.75 a year ago, and Qualcomm said it ended its long-running licensing dispute with Huawei with a new agreement.

Qualcomm quarterly revenues down 27%, sees mixed Q1

Qualcomm reported revenues for its fiscal fourth quarter down 27 percent year-on-year to USD 4.8 billion, as the resumption of licence payments from Apple was unable to offset the weakness in the smartphone market. The sales were at the low end of the company's guidance. Net earnings still increased, to USD 0.42 from a loss of USD 0.36 per share a year ago, thanks to fewer one-time charges and the group's share buyback programme.

Qualcomm Technologies to enhance cellular connectivity products with Microsoft Azure Sphere for the IoT

Qualcomm Technologies, a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, announced at its 5G Summit in Barcelona, Spain that it's developing what it calls the first cellular chip optimised and certified for Microsoft's Azure Sphere Internet of Things (IoT) operating system. Qualcomm Technologies' new Azure Sphere-certified chipset for IoT will include hardware-level security, come preconfigured with the Azure Sphere, and will automatically connect to Azure Sphere security cloud services.

Qualcomm and TDK have launched a joint venture under the name RF360 Holdings Singapore. The joint venture will enable Qualcomm's RFFE Business Unit to deliver RF front-end (RFFE) modules and RF filters into fully integrated systems for mobile devices and business segments, such as IoT, automotive applications, connected computing, and more. The business being transferred constitutes a part of the TDK SAW Business Group activities.
