Qualcomm releases Snapdragon 660, 630 mobile platforms

Qualcomm has released two new mobile platforms, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 and 630, which include the Snapdragon 660 and 630 SoCs. The company said both are designed to support a advanced photography and gaming capabilities, in addition to ensuring long battery life and fast LTE speeds. 

The Snapdragon 660 and 630 mobile platforms focus on seven categories of features: camera, audio/visual processing, connectivity, improved CPU and GPU, Qualcomm Quick Charge 4,  security and machine learning. The Snapdragon 660 and 630 mobile platforms share the same modem and camera architecture, and are pin and software compatible, making it simpler and easier for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to build, test and calibrate their devices. Both platforms use a 14nm FinFET process and provide 4K video capture and playback capabilities, along with 8GB maximum memory and Vulkan API support. In addition, the Snapdragon 660 Mobile Platform supports displays up to QHD (2K) resolution, whereas the 630 supports FHD/QXGA (1080p).

Qualcomm intros smart speaker, USB-C audio products

Qualcomm announced its own chip platform for the growing market of smart speakers. Unveiled at its voice and music developer conference in Shenzhen, the Qualcomm Smart Audio Platform brings together processing capability, connectivity options, voice user interfaces and premium audio technologies. The company offers two SoC options based on Qualcomm's APQ8009 and APQ8017, with a range of software configurations for OEMs.

Qualcomm extends NXP offer as only 16% of shares tendered

Qualcomm has extended its takeover offer for NXP Semiconductors for another month, after only 16.3 percent of shares were tendered so far. The takeover for USD 47 billion was first agreed last October and is expected to close by the end of 2017. The bid is now open until 02 May after the latest extension. Qualcomm said that as of 03 April, 16.3 percent of NXP's common shares had been validly tendered. The company's offer is conditional on acquiring at least 80 percent of NXP's shares.
