Qualcomm to launch Toq smartwatch

Qualcomm is releasing its own smartwatch, called the Toq. Available in Q4, the Toq is designed to serve as a second display for a smartphone as well as a showcase for Qualcomm's technology. It will feature a low-power Mirasol display from Qualcomm MEMS, wireless charging with Qualcomm WiPower LE technology and stereo Bluetooth.

Qualcomm said the the limited edition smartwatch offers a colour capacitive touchscreen that is always on, with "days" of battery life before the device needs to be recharged. Users can manage smartphone calls, text messages, meeting reminders and various notifications from their wrist. Developers also will be able to use Qualcomm's AllJoyn framework to send program notifications to the smartwatch through the Qualcomm Toq app. Qualcomm will continue adding functionality to Toq through software upgrades, including integration with its 2net platform for m-health services.

Toq also will be made available in a 'Premium Audio Edition' with wireless stereo headphones and high-quality stereo sound. At launch, Toq will be compatible with Android 4.0.3 and above mobile devices. Qualcomm said it hopes to develop the Toq technologies further with other players in the emerging industry for wearable mobile devices.

Qualcomm posts strong Q3, gives cautious outlook

Qualcomm reported another quarter of strong growth thanks to demand for its chips in smartphones. Revenues of USD 6.48 billion were up 33 percent year-over-year and 4 percent sequentially. Operating profit for its fiscal fourth quarter rose 29 percent from a year earlier to USD 1.59 billion, and net income for the three months to September increased 18 percent to USD 1.50 billion or 86 cents a share. HTC plans Android smartwatch - report

HTC is developing a smartwatch that runs Android and can take pictures, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Cost, full functions and sales strategy for the watch are still to be decided before it's released by the second half of 2014, said the report.
