
RIM grows quarterly BlackBerry shipments, revenues 40%

Research In Motion reported another quarter of record BlackBerry shipments, up 40 percent from a year earlier to 14.2 million in the three months to 27 November. Revenues for the company's fiscal third quarter were also up 40 percent, to USD 5.5 billion, and earnings rose 58 percent from a year ago to USD 1.74. RIM had over 55 million BlackBerry subscriber accounts at the end of November, after activations of 5.1 million in the quarter. Cash flow from operations reached USD 975 million, and the cash position was USD 2.5 billion at the end of the period. RIM forecast revenues for the three months to February of USD 5.5-5.7 billion and a gross margin similar to the Q3 level. EPS is estimated at USD 1.74-1.80. RIM also announced that co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis have been named co-chairmen of the board. John Richardson remains as lead independent director of RIM and will continue to facilitate the functioning of the board independently of management. Furthermore, Jim Estill has resigned as director of RIM due to a business conflict, after 13 years on the board.
