RIM shows updates to BlackBerry 7, PlayBook OS
Research In Motion is showing updates to its smartphone OS BlackBerry 7 and tablet software at the CES in Las Vegas. BlackBerry 7.1 is rolling out as an update already, and updated versions of BBM, BlackBerry Traffic and BlackBerry Travel have also launched on the BlackBerry App World. New features in 7.1 OS include BlackBerry Tag for sharing content and BBM invitations over NFC, Wi-Fi hotspot sharing for up to five devices, auto-suggest in Bing search, improved BlackBerry Maps and FM radio on the BlackBerry Curve 9360 and 9380 phones. RIM is also showing the PlayBook OS 2.0, which is scheduled to launch as a free update for PlayBook tablet owners in February. New features will include enhanced messaging and e-mail functions, closer integration of contacts across applications, remote control and content delivery functions for the BlackBerry Bridge app to control the tablet with a BlackBerry phone, Print to Go and improved Documents to Go editing, and dedicated space in the App World for internal corporate apps. RIM also promises more apps for the tablet with the update, including the launch of a video-on-demand storefront in the US. This will include new releases available for purchase or rent the same day they come out on DVD.
