Roman Abramovich invests GBP 70 mln in Truphone
The Minden investment vehicle of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has acquired a 23 percent stake in UK-based global mobile VoIP provider Truphone for GBP 70 million, reports the Financial Times. The deal values Truphone at around GBP 300 million. The company also raised an extra GBP 5 million from a separate, undisclosed investor. It will use the cash to fund an expansion of its international calling services. The Truphone service is currently available to business travellers in the UK, US and Australia. The financing will help expand to Spain, Germany, Poland, Hong Kong and the Netherlands in 2013. Truphone is also in talks with potential partners to add more countries. The company is looking to double its customer base in 2013 and add around 500 new workers, mostly in the UK.
