The Romanian government has approved an emergency ordinance requiring registration of personal details of prepaid mobile Sim users from 01 January 2020, reports the local press. The measure is part of a wider package to implement EU rules on identifying and locating callers to the 112 emergency number.
Government spokesman Nelu Barbu announced the measure after a cabinet meeting, saying it would help improve security. As a result, anyone buying a prepaid Sim will need to first show the provider their ID documents. Those who already use a prepaid Sim will have eight months, until 01 September 2020, to register their details with their providers. The data will be made available to the national emergency calls system to help identify callers.
The ordinance also increased the fines for fake calls to 112, from RON 500-1,000 to RON 1,500-5,000.
