RTL Netherlands revenues up 6.8% in Q4, EBITA falls

RTL Netherlands reported revenues of EUR 156 million for the fourth quarter of 2018, up 6.8 percent from a year earlier, while its EBITA fell 24 percent over the same period to EUR 29 million. RTL said revenue growth came from the TV advertising market, as well as its VOD service Videoland and other digital activities. Platform costs, such as distribution with operators, increased sharply in 2018 due to new contracts.

The broadcaster's market share in the key 25-54 age group fell to 27.2 percent in 2018 from 31.1 percent the previous year, based on figures from ratings agency SKO. It remained ahead of the public broadcaster NPO (25.5%) and the Talpa group (20.1%).

The main channel RTL 4 saw its audience share drop to 15.7 percent from 18.2 percent among 25-54 year-olds. RTL 5 was stable in its target group 25-39, with a 4.7 percent share, and RTL 8 grew its share to 4.4 percent among 35-59 year-old women.

The company's YouTube channels and websites accumulated 2.25 billion views last year, up 8.5 percent. RTL reported growth for the channels Buienradar, RTL Nieuws and RTL XL (AVOD). Videoland increased subscribers by 135 percent and viewing time rose 230 percent, helped by exclusive content such as van Temptation Island VIPs and Mocro Maffia.

RTL expects the Dutch TV/video market to show average annual growth of 5.6 percent per year in the period 2017-22, going from revenues of EUR 1.4 billion to EUR 1.8 billion. While the linear TV market is expected to decline around 0.6 percent per year, catch-up TV is estimated stable at around EUR 100 million, online short-form will grow from around EUR 200 to 300 million, and SVOD will triple, from EUR 200 to EUR 600 million.
