Safaricom appoints Joseph as interim CEO
Kenyan operator Safaricom’s board has appointed Michael Joseph as acting CEO following the death of Bob Collymore on 1 July. Joseph is currently the chairman of Kenya Airways and previously served as the CEO of Safaricom. The board said Joseph will hold this position until the board communicates in due course on a permanent appointment. 

The board said its confident that during this transition, Joseph will provide the necessary guidance and leadership to the company and its employees. Collymore, 61, died at his Nairobi home following a battle with cancer.

Safaricom director Joseph resigns

Kenyan operator Safaricom has announced the resignation of Michael Joseph as a director on the its board effective 01 August. Joseph has played various roles within the company since 2000, including serving as the founding CEO. During his time there, he was instrumental bringing the operator from a subscriber base of less than 18,000 in 2000 to over 17 million by the time of his retirement in November 2010, and was also behind the launch of both the Safaricom and M-Pesa Foundations.

Michael was CEO at the Kenyan operator from 2000 to 2010, succeeded by Bob Collymore. He came back as the acting CEO after the passing of Collymore, and held the position until Peter Ndegwa was appointed CEO.

Kenyan operator Safaricom has appointed Peter Ndegwa its new CEO from 01 April 2020. Ndegwa joins Safaricom from Diageo where he is the MD of Diageo Continental Europe, after spending over 25 years in various roles within the financial services and consumer goods sectors in Africa and Europe.

Safaricom says recruitment to replace Collymore has reached advanced stage

Kenyan operator Safaricom has started the process of recruiting a new chief executive officer to replace the late Bob Collymore, Business Daily reported. Acting CEO Michael Joseph told shareholders at the AGM that recruitment is under way and is now at an advanced stage. The identity of the next person to take charge of the country's largest listed from has elicited public interest and debate in recent weeks.

Safaricom proposes to have majority of Kenyan directors in AGM notice

Safaricom's shareholders will vote at the end of August on a proposal to give Kenyans more seats on the board, reports the Standard.  In a notice to shareholders to attend the Annual General Meeting on 30 August, Safaricom proposes to change the company's Articles of Association to increase the number of seats on its board to eleven from the current ten. It said in the notice the majority of its directors would be Kenyan.

Safaricom founding CEO sells off his shares

Kenyan operator Safaricom's founding CEO Michael Joseph has sold off his shareholding in the company, reports The Standard citing the company's annual report. Joseph, who was appointed interim chief executive in July following the death of Bob Collymore, sold off all the shares he held in the company in the course of the financial year to March.

Kenyan govt stays out of Safaricom CEO succession

The Kenyan government has dropped its stance on the succession race at Safaricom, saying it will work with whoever the board chooses to replace Bob Collymore as CEO following his death on 01 July, Business Daily reported. His contract would have run until August 2020 and Reuters said earlier this year that the government sought his succession by a local, which was delaying his replacement.

Safaricom CEO Collymore dies

Collymore's tenure at Safaricom was to come to an end in August but the company extended his contract by one more year. He had said he owes Safaricom for time spent away from office during his treatment. In a recent interview with local media, Collymore revealed details of how he was misdiagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency. He narrated how he fell ill and it took a long time before doctors realised he had a serious medical condition.
