Samsung Pay lands in Europe with Spain launch

Samsung has announced the launch of its Samsung Pay m-payment service in Spain, confirming earlier reports. Spain becomes the first European country to accept the service, which debuted in South Korea and the US last year. Samsung subsequently revealed plans to roll out Samsung Pay in four to seven European markets, including the UK, over the next year. In a statement, the company said the Spanish service will be supported by CaixaBank and imaginBank at launch, with Banco Sabadell and Abanca also about to join.

The company added that Samsung Pay will be available at all stores with contactless terminals throughout Spain and that a number of partnership deals with leading businesses will be announced. The deals will allow well-known brands such as Cepsa, Domino’s Pizza, El Corte Ingles, DIA, MediaMarkt, Mercadona, Phone House, Repsol, Starbucks and VIPS to create value-added services for their customers, said Samsung.

Department store group El Corte Ingles has already announced that it will become the first issuer of private cards in Spain to offer its customers the opportunity to join and pay via Samsung Pay. Customers will also be able to use Samsung Pay at Madrid’s Prado museum.

Samsung Pay is available on NFC-enabled Samsung devices such as the Galaxy S7, S7 edge, S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+, with the Galaxy A5 2016 to add support in the coming weeks.
