Samsung wins USD 6.6 bln order from Verizon for 5G telecom gear

Samsung Electronics announced it has secured a KRW 7.9 trillion (USD 6.6 billion) order to supply 5G telecommunications equipment to Verizon, the Nikkei reported. The deal paves the way for the South Korean company to expand its presence in the US as its Chinese rival, Huawei Technologies, remains locked out of the world's largest telecom market. 

Samsung's local unit Samsung Electronics America on 5 September signed the deal with Verizon Sourcing, a subsidiary of Verizon Communications, to offer network products for the wireless carrier through 2025. This includes providing, establishing and maintaining the company's 5G mobile telecom equipment.

Samsung forecasts slower Q4 after smartphones drive jump in Q3 results

Samsung Electronics reported a strong increase in third-quarter results, led by a 50 percent sequential increase in mobile phone sales. While demand recovered in Q3 from the Covid-19 effects earlier in the year, Samsung said it expects profit to fall in Q4, amid weakening memory chip demand from server customers and intensifying competition in mobile phones and consumer electronics.

Samsung sees Q3 operating profit up 58% after sales grow 6.5%

Samsung Electronics said it expects to report third-quarter sales of KRW 66 trillion and operating profit of KRW 12.3 trillion. That means year-on-year revenue growth of 6.5 percent and profit up 58 percent.

Samsung TV Plus to debut on selected Galaxy smartphones

Samsung Electronics America announced that the Samsung TV Plus app on Samsung Smart TVs will launch 23 September in the Galaxy Store and Google Play for selected Galaxy smartphones. The app will offer some Galaxy users access to the shows and content they love for free, the company said.

Verizon moves ahead with virtual RAN roll-out after successful tests

Verizon announced it has completed the first end-to-end fully virtualized 5G data session in the US. This technology milestone in the virtualisation of its radio access network is expected to support the operator's development of wide-scale mobile edge computing and network slicing services. Full vRAN deployment will commence in the coming months, the company said.

Samsung has claimed a new speed record of 8.5 Gbps over a 5G network using mmWave spectrum. The test involved 800 MHz of spectrum using eight-carrier aggregation and MU-MIMO on the company's 5G mmWave Active Unit.

Verizon launches first 5G mobile service in Chicago, Minneapolis

Verizon has confirmed the start of its 5G mobile service, in parts of Minneapolis and Chicago. The launch came a week ahead of schedule. Customers can access the service with the new 5G mod for the Moto Z3 smartphone and receive speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

Samsung to provide CPE for Verizon 5G Home service

Samsung said it will provide Verizon's 5G Home service with equipment for customers in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Houston and Indianapolis. The service will be supported by Samsung's FCC-certified 5G systems, including a compact 5G home and outdoor router, 5G Radio (Access Unit, Digital Unit-integrated type), and virtualized radio systems. Verizon will be launching 5G in these cities from 1 October.

Verizon reaches multi-gigabit throughput over 5G NR and mmWave spectrum in Samsung lab

Verizon said it has reached multi-gigabit throughput over 3GPP 5G New radio (NR) and mmWave spectrum in the lab, together with Samsung, in a world first. Data transmission was performed using the 800 MHz bandwidth of 28 GHz frequency, resulting in a maximum throughput of almost 4Gbps. The test took place at the Dallas, Texas, lab of Samsung, using the company's NR tech over mmWave spectrum and National Instruments (NI) 5G test user equipment.

Samsung becomes Verizon LTE network supplier

Samsung Electronics announced it has been selected by Verizon to become a supplier for the US operator's LTE Open RAN. Samsung will supply Verizon with equipment including Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) and Baseband Units (BBUs) that supports the operator's LTE Advanced capabilities as well as current CAT-M and future NB-IoT platforms.
