SaT5G project successfully demonstrates 5G over satellite

The SaT5G project has completed several successful demonstrations of 5G over satellite. The announcement was made at an industry-briefing event at the University of Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre in the UK.

Sat5G is an Horizon 2020 project, funded by the EC, to develop a cost-effective, plug & play system for integrating satellite communications with 5G networks. The project has successfully integrated satellite into 3GPP 5G testbed networks.

Tests in Brazil have shown that 5G services are possible in the 3.5 GHz band without disrupting satellite TV signals in the C band. The industry group SindiTelebrasil presented the results of the tests conducted with the CPqD and Anatel to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications.

FCC chair chooses public auction for C band over satellite operators' plan

FCC chairman Ajit Pai announced that the US regulator plans to hold a public auction of the 3.7-4.2 GHz band. This means a rejection of the proposal from the so-called C-Band Alliance, for the satellite operators using the frequencies to sell the spectrum themselves to mobile operators and share the proceeds with the government.

C-Band Alliance offers to share auction proceeds with treasury, build rural 5G network

The C-Band Alliance has filed a new proposal with the FCC in the US, outlining how it would share proceeds from auctioning its spectrum with the US treasury and contribute to building a rural 5G network. The alliance includes satellite operators SES, Intelsat and Telesat, who are looking to monetise part of their C band spectrum in a sale to mobile operators.
