Saudi Telecom, Qtel last bidders for Syria licence
Saudi Telecom and Qatar Telecom reached the final phase of Syria's auction for a third mobile licence. Deputy Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Al Jalali said UAE-based Etisalat, Turkcell and France Telecom have pulled out of the race. The three companies withdrew because they did not agree with some contractual issues, including the 25 percent share in revenue for the Syrian state and its monopoly over infrastructure for seven years, according to a telecommunications ministry statement. They also objected to requirements for certain frequencies not being available. Bidders will be notified about the evaluation results on 14 April, and the auction will be held on 27 April. The auction will open with a bid of EUR 90 million. Qatar Telecom chairman Shaikh Abdullah Bin Mohammad Al Thani said that unrest in Syria has not changed the company's interest in the country's third mobile licence.

France Telecom drops bid for Syria licence

France Telecom will no longer bid for the third mobile operating licence in Syria. France Telecom said its decision to pull out of the Syrian tender was not linked to events in Syria but the conditions of the licence. Etisalat and Turkcell earlier withdrew from the bidding for similar reasons.

Turkcell pulls out of Syria tender

Turkcell has scrapped plans to tender for Syria's third mobile licence, without giving reasons. Turkcell's move not to bid for the licence comes two days after UAE-based Etisalat dropped its plans to participate in the tender, saying such a move would not add value to its shareholders. Other interested bidders include Saudi Telecom, Qatar Telecom and France Telecom.

UAE-based operator Etisalat has abandoned plans to bid for Syria's third mobile licence. An Etisalat statement confirmed the company was not satisfied with the terms of the tender and had decided to withdraw. Qtel to bid for Syria mobile licence

Qtel will bid for Syria's third mobile licence, the Qatari group's chairman Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohamed bin Saud al-Thani told the annual general meeting. He said the board has taken the decision to pursue the third licence in Syria, saying it was important for Qtel to be in the country. Sheikh Abdullah denied reports that Qtel was reconsidering its plans to invest in Syria because of the current unrest in part of the country. SyriaTel and South Africa's MTN operate Syria's existing two licences.

MTN Syria nears 5 million customers

MTN Syria reported a 2.5 percent fall in revenue in 2010 to ZAR 6.8 billion and a 14 percent increase in EBITDA to ZAR 1.6 billion.
