SFR launches Android STB to expand reach of OTT subscriptions to non-network customers

French operator SFR announced the launch of ‘Connect TV’, a 4K-compatible Android TV set-top box (STB) priced at EUR 69. The device, initially sold across SFR’s retail stores and soon online, comes with pre-loaded applications to access the OTT subscription packages RMC Sport and SFR Cine-Series, shortly to be joined by an entertainment bundle (SFR Divertissement) including, among others, several Discovery channels.

The launch aims to grow the target market for the operator’s OTT services among non-network customers, ahead of the start of the UEFA Champions League, available exclusively via RMC Sport. This renewed focus on selling content directly is in line with the pricing strategy implemented in March, under which SFR offers its three main content propositions – sports, cinema and press – as optional add-ons instead of bundling them automatically within its fixed and mobile packages.

Running on the Android 7.1 Nougat operating system, the Wi-Fi-enabled STB supports Google Assistant and is powered by an Amlogic quad-core processor. Users will have access to other applications via the Google Play Store. The broadband connection required by the device is described as a minimum of 3 Mbps.
