Shaw picks Nokia Siemens to roll out mobile network
Canadian cable operator Shaw Communications selected Nokia Siemens Networks to roll out its new mobile network. NSN will provide the radio access network and core equipment for the fully 3G and LTE-capable network. The mobile network will be linked to the operator's existing fibre network. Shaw acquired mobile spectrum rights covering its existing footprint in the AWS auction in 2008.

Canadian cable operator Shaw Communications has confirmed plans to roll out a wireless network. The company said it will spend CAD 100 million this year on the project. It has already started hiring the required technical employees and expects to launch the network before the end of 2011. Skype in talks with mobile carriers, handset makers

Skype is in talks with mobile network operators and mobile handset makers about installing the company's VoIP service, Skype general manager for mobile, Russ Shaw, told Reuters in an interview. These would be similar to an existing agreement with 3 Group. Shaw said that Skype expected to announce new carrier agreements in 2010 and that it had held talks with unnamed carriers in China, Europe, North America and other Asian markets.

Shaw Communications to hold off on mobile investments

Canadian operator Shaw Communications reported service revenues for the fiscal fourth quarter of CAD 806 million, up 13 percent from a year earlier. Operating profit before amortisation also rose 13 percent, to CAD 370 million. Net profit for the three months to 31 August dipped to CAD 132 million from CAD 136 million a year ago. Canada raises CAD 4.3 bln in spectrum auction

The Canadian government has completed its auction of spectrum in the 2 GHz band, raising in total almost CAD 4.3 billion. Some 282 licences were issued to 15 companies, after almost eight weeks of bidding. Of the 105 MHz of spectrum made available, 40 MHz was set aside exclusively for new entrants to bid on. The other 65 MHz was available to all bidders.
