Six operators interested in Colombia 5G spectrum tender

Colombia's Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (Mintic) announced that a total of six local operators have expressed an interest in acquiring 5G-ready spectrum in the country’s forthcoming tenders. After confirming plans to auction spectrum in the 700MHz, 1.9GHz, 2.5Ghz and 3.5GHz bands between 2021 and 2022, Mintic said it received expressions of interest from Claro (America Movil), Movistar (Telefonica), Tigo (Millicom), Partners (Avantel), Emcali and ETB. 

ETB expressed an interest in all four bands, with Claro and Partners also interested in 700MHz frequencies, while all operators expect Partners were also interested in the 3.5GHz band. Claro, Movistar and Tigo have already begun carrying out 5G tests on the 3.5GHz band after Mintic released a spectrum block for the trials.

Colombia's Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (Mintic) is set to launch a new public consultation on plans to update the country's 2015 decree on mobile spectrum caps with a view to fostering the development of 5G, reports website BN Americas, citing new telecommunications minister Carmen Ligia Valderrama Rojas. National spectrum agency (ANE) will also produce a study on the best 5G test experiences, said Valderrama at the Andicom event.

Nokia conducts first 5G underground mining trial in Colombia

Nokia and mining company AngloGold Ashanti said they have conducted the first underground 5G mining trial in Colombia in partnership with Epiroc, Sandvik, Tigo and OSC Top. A total of four mining use cases were tested as part of the trial carried out in Jerico, including mission-critical communications, connectivity and remote teleoperation of vehicles, mining machinery and systems, and inspection and monitoring with drones and high-definition cameras.

Colombia to hold 5G tender in December - minister

Colombia will finally hold its delayed tender of 5G-ready spectrum in December 2021, according to the country's connectivity undersecretary Walid David. The confirmation follows last year's consultation on the government's auction plans that revealed interest from six local operators, with the 3.5GHz band receiving the most expressions of interest. The band has already been made available for a series of 5G trials ahead of the tender.

Colombia launches new spectrum caps proposal

Colombia's Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (Mintic) has launched a consultation on a draft decree to update the country's 2015 decree on mobile spectrum caps. The aim of the decree drawn up with the technical assistance of national spectrum agency (ANE) and taking into account the best international practices is to define a new classification for 3 GHZ and above frequency ranges ahead of next year's 5G spectrum tender, said the ministry.

Colombian operator Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Bogota (ETB) has joined forces with ZTE to carry out a series of tests of 5G technology using temporary spectrum freed up by the country's Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (Mintic). The trial conducted in the Bogota region using ETB's fibre-optic network and ZTE equipment saw the partners reach download speeds of 1.22 Gbps, some 4 times faster than the maximum speed available over 4G, plus almost immediate latency speeds of 3 milliseco

Colombia's ETB adds DirecTV Go to TV offer

Colombian operator Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Bogota (ETB) has reached an agreement with AT&T's Latin American subsidiary Vrio to add content from the latter's DirecTV Go catalogue to its fibre plans. ETB's FTTH customers can now access 90 live TV channels and over 10,000 titles on demand for an additional COP 44,990 (around USD 12) a month, with a 25 percent reduction for the first 12 months.

Movistar Colombia launches second 5G pilot in Bogota

Movistar Colombia (Telefonica) has announced the launch of its second trial of 5G technology ahead of the forthcoming tender of 5G-ready spectrum. The 5G pilot saw the company team up with ICT ministry Mintic and Bogota's Central Military Hospital to connect a telemedicine trolley for use in the Covid-19 emergency ward as well as a Teletriage platform.

ETB and Ufinet set up Colombian FTTH company to cover Bogota

Colombian operator Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Bogota (ETB) has signed an agreement with Latin American wholesale fibre operator Ufinet to create a company that will commercialise a neutral Fiber To The Home (FTTH) network in the wholesale telecommunications market throughout the Bogota region. The network will begin with a footprint of more than 1.2 million homes, with the partners aiming to double that figure to around 2.5 million homes within 3 years.

Colombian fibre subs up 1 mln to 16% of internet total in Q3

Colombia reached a total of 1.2 million fibre-optic connections at the end of the third quarter of 2020, up over 1 million year on year, according to a report from the country's ICT ministry Mintic. The figure is equivalent to 15.7 percent of the fixed line total, behind cable with 4.7 million subscribers and DSL with 1.3 million. Average landline speeds more than doubled to 30.6Mbps in the July to September period.

Colombia to bring internet to 475 rural schools in Sucre

Colombia's Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (Mintic) announced plans to connect a total of 475 school in the northern Sucre department to the internet. Following a virtual meeting with schools and colleges, ICT Minister Karen Abudinen committed to providing internet access at the schools via digital centres or free connection points until at least 2031. A total of 2,273 computers will be delivered to the department this year alone.

Colombia ready to invest USD 1 bln in smart cities and digital zones

The Colombian government is planning to invest nearly USD 1 billion in two new digital programmes, reports BN Americas, citing the ICT ministry's communications industry chief Jorge Barrera Medina. Around USD 342 million will be allocated to convert 63 cities into smart cities after EY completes a survey on the specific focus areas and challenges, said Barrera. In addition, some USD 575 million will be set aside to create another 10,000 digital centres over the next two years.

Following initial launches in Brazil and Uruguay, 5G technology is set to reach 15 million connections in Latin America by the end of 2022, rising to 62 million across the region by 2025, according to a new report from the GSMA. The 2025 figure is equivalent to a near 10 percent adoption rate, with 4G accounting for 67 percent of connections by that same year.
