SK Telecom complains about rivals' subsidies
Korean telecommunications firm SK Telecom has asked the regulator to take action against its rivals for excessive subsidies. SK Telecom accuses KT and LG Uplus of impeding competition by providing subsidies that amount to over KRW 700,000 over the past two months, the Korea Herald writes citing SK Telecom officials. As a result, SK Telecom saw its subscriber base shrink by 23,809 from May to 14 June, while KT and LG Uplus gained 6,077 and 17,732 subscribers, respectively. An SKT spokesperson also said that the company is spending about half of the subsidies of its competitors on average. The government has limited subsidies to KRW 270,000. LG Uplus officials said: "We will also seriously consider obtaining evidence that SKT was also part of irregularities to make the request to the Korea Communications Commission."
