SK Telecom completes first 5G call with Samsung commercial equipment
South Korean operator SK Telecom, in cooperation with Samsung Electronics, has completed the first 5G call using the 3GPP 5G Non-standalone (NSA) new radio (NR) standard and commercial 5G NR equipment that can be readily applied in a commercial 5G network. The call took place at SK Telecom's 5G testbed in its Bundang office building. The first 5G NSA-NR calls were achieved by using services that SK Telecom and Samsung jointly developed and built for the trial on 3.5GHz 5G NR radio, 4G LTE radio and NSA core.

South Korean operator SK Telecom has teamed up with Samsung Electronics and Cisco to launch a joint 5G-based smart office services offering. Under the terms of the deal, the three partners will plan and develop 5G smart office services; develop a joint services package; and promote integrated marketing initiatives.

South Korean operators launch commercial 5G services

South Korea has launched commercial 5G network services on 1 December. Domestic mobile operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus will initially provide 5G services in Seoul and other major cities, The Korea Times reports. Their next-generation network services will initially be available for enterprise customers.

SK Telecom's Q3 net income jumps nearly 15%, revenues almost flat

SK Telecom ended September 2018 with a total subscriber base of 30.77 million, up 2 percent year-on-year and 0.2 percent in the quarter. The company had 24.39 million LTE subscribers, representing an 8.1 percent growth year-on-year, and accounting for 79.3 percent of the company's total mobile subscriber base.

NEC, Samsung enter 5G partnership agreement

NEC and Samsung Electronics entered into a partnership to strengthen their business portfolio including 5G. The partnership brings together technology and expertise in 5G, merging NEC and Samsung's knowledge in 5G and IT products. It also provides mobile carriers with flexible 5G products that are localised for each region with customised services to meet mobile carriers' demands efficiently.
