Sky launches Roku-based TV stick in Germany, Austria

Sky has launched its TV stick in Germany and Austria, giving access to its premium content from any TV. The HDMI stick plugs into the TV set and connects over Wi-Fi to access the Sky content, such as sports matches and films on-demand. 

With the Sky Ticket TV Stick, users can also access online apps such as the media libraries of German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, as well as YouTube and Vimeo. The stick is based on the Roku platform and costs EUR 29.99. 

The price includes a choice of three Entertainment Monthly Tickets with access to exclusive series such as Sky Original Productions and international top series from HBO, Showtime, Fox and TNT; two Cinema Month Tickets for the latest movies and more than 1,000 films on demand, or a sports monthly ticket with lice sports such as the Bundesliga, Champions League, handball, tennis and golf.

The stick is available to order from Sky's website and will also be sold at retailers.

Austrian consumer protection organisation VKI is in dispute with Sky Austria. The Commercial Court of Vienna has declared 27 clauses of Sky's general terms and conditions inadmissible. One problem is the numerous unlawful clauses in Sky's general terms and conditions, and the other is Sky's tendency to refer to consumers' spoken consent to take up services during a Sky sales call, even though the consumers never gave any written confirmation.

Sky Deutschland announced the takeover of @Friends, a telemarketing company to grow its customer service and sales. The company adds to Sky's new call centre opened in Berlin-Kreuzberg in January, with @Friends locations in Bielefeld, Braunschweig and Detmold. The @Friends CEOs Heike Ehlers and Wolfram Dura will work with Sky COO Customer Service Michael Meiers going forward.

Unitymedia and ZDF close long-term broadcast agreement

German broadcaster ZDF and cable network operator Unitymedia have reached a long-term cooperation agreement, putting aside a long-running dispute over feed-in tariffs for programming. The agreement enables all TV customers of Unitymedia in the states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Baden-Wurttemberg to receive the entire range of offerings from ZDF and 3sat.

YouTube is launching its first set of productions made in Germany as part of a wider bid to win customers over to the video platform's for-pay subscription offerings, reported OnlineKosten.de. The three recently launched series include the comedy shows Neuland and Bullsprit as well as a documentary series LeFloid Vs. The World and are available both within Germany as well as internationally.

Sky launches Sky Soundbox in Germany and Austria

The speakers contain three tweeters and six woofers in their interior as well as HDMI input and output and an optical input, while Bluetooth functionality enables customers to play music from mobile devices or streaming services through the speakers. When used with the Sky Q receiver, the Sky Soundbox automatically detects the type of content being played and adapts its settings to deliver the ideal sound quality for movies, sports or TV, said Sky.
