Mobile users are sending text (SMS) messages with greater frequency, according to a poll solicited by SMS.ac. The wireless communications company plays host to the largest mobile community in the world, with millions of users located throughout 220 countries. Each day, SMS.ac polls its users on issues dealing with the wireless space. Approximately 65% of 53,176 respondents to a 24-hour December survey said that they are sending more SMS than three months ago. And this wireless trend is manifesting itself in the U.S., as well as internationally. SMS.ac chairman and chief executive officer Michael Pousti says that the number of domestic registrations is up about 23% from two months ago, while the number of daily messages sent by SMS.ac members in the U.S. rose from 1.8 to 2.4 messages during the same period of time.
"Text messaging is clearly on the rise in the U.S.," said Pousti. "And while text use continues to rise internationally, MMS is emerging as the technology that will eventually become the industry standard for the distribution of most wireless data. The SMS.ac polling mechanism is an invaluable tool that keeps us closely connected to mobile user preferences around the world."
With regard to the emergence of multimedia messaging (MMS), 2.5% of approximately 53-thousand SMS.ac members that participated in a recent poll said that they are already using an MMS-enabled mobile phone. And there is more good news for phone manufacturers. Nearly 64% of 54,165 respondents to a poll said they planned to purchase a new mobile phone within the next six months.
