Softbank's 9-month revenue up 4%, profit jumps 20%
Japanese communications provider Softbank saw its net sales top JPY 6.81 trillion in the nine months ended 31 December 2017, which represents an increase of 4 percent year-on-year. Net income jumped 20 percent to JPY 1.01 trillion in the 9-month period. Adjusted EBITDA also increased 3 percent year-on-year to JPY 6.81 trillion.

Net sales increased at the Domestic Telecommunications segment, the Sprint segment, the Yahoo Japan segment, the Distribution segment, and the Arm segment. Arm’s net sales reflected results of operations of Arm since 6 September 2016.

The Domestic Telecommunications segment’s net sales reached JPY 2.406 trillion, up from JPY 2.400 trillion in the year-earlier period. The Sprint segment's net sales totaled USD 24 billion (JPY 2.7 trillion), which represents a decline of 2 percent, while the Yahoo Japan segment’s net sales reached JPY 651.5 billion, up from JPY 630.8 billion in the year-earlier period.

The Domestic Telecommunications Segment posted a subscriber increase of 1.13 million for smartphones and 1.07 million for SoftBank Hikari from previous fiscal year end. The number of mobile subscribers reached 32.99 million at end-December, following 596,000 net additions from 31 March 2017. The number of Home Bundle Discount Hikari Set Applications at the end of the quarter stood at 7.6 million for mobile services, up 1.5 million from March, and 3.67 million for broadband services, up by 766,000 in the period. The number of mobile devices sold for main subscribers decreased by 61,000 year-on-year to 7.78 million at 31 December. 

The cumulative number of subscribers for broadband services at the end of December stood at 6.83 million, which represents an increase of 687,000 users from March.
