Sonim Technologies, the maker of rugged handsets, announced the appointment of Tom Wilkinson as CEO, effective 29 October. Wilkinson previously served as CEO of Xplore Technologies before it was sold to Zebra Technologies in 2018. He replaces Bob Plaschke, who has served as CEO since 2005 and will become a strategic advisor to the board.
Wilkinson was appointed recently as Chairman and Interim CEO of Cipherloc, but the company said earlier this month it was working to retain a permanent CEO. Wilkinson's previous experience includes appointments as CFO, as well as other business leadership roles.
Sonim made the announcement alongside third-quarter results. The company reported an adjusted EBITDA loss of USD 5.1 million on revenues down 27 percent to USD 28.9 million.
Wilkinson and interim CFO Bob Tirva will work in the coming months to formulate a 2020 operating plan for Sonim. This plan will include an expansion of products and markets, as well as ways to improve Sonim's ability to make estimates and therefore plan its costs and operations appropriately, the company said.
In the mean time, Sonim said it continues to work on distribution of its phones with carries and retailers, as well as addressing previously disclosed technical issues with its XP8 smartphone and other devices which launched at a number of carriers this year. These and other issues mean the company will not be giving forward-looking financial guidance.
