South African telecoms group ACT urges action on power crisis and sabotage
The Association of Comms and Technology (ACT) has called for urgent action to address South Africa's worsening power situation, TechCentral reported.  ACT, whose members include Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, Cell C, Liquid Intelligent Technologies and Rain, said it is crucial that the government and regulators take immediate and effective action to address the power crisis and network security, as well as the issue of economic sabotage of physical infrastructure, by outlining a comprehensive plan.

MTN South Africa launches integrated wind and solar hybrid project

MTN South Africa has launched its first project in an integrated wind and solar renewable energy generation roll-out as part of its Net Zero efforts. Hybrid renewable energy systems provide "green" energy to power assets sustainably, reducing reliance on unstable grids and the carbon-emitting fuels that are driving global warming. The launch forms part of a six-month plan with completion due in Q3, with a small-scale field trial in Worcester in the Western Cape.

South African telecoms services provider Corridor Africa Technologies says it is developing methods to safeguard mobile network operators (MNOs) against the effects of persistent loadshedding. It is integrating back-up power systems, monitoring, and intelligent network management to enable MNOs to provide uninterrupted connectivity. CEO Matone Ditlhake said power disruptions cause inconvenience and hamper MNOs' abilities to monetise surging data use.

Icasa sets up committee to ascertain impact of load shedding on ICT industry

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has established a Council Committee to determine the impact of the current state of load-shedding on the telecoms, broadcasting and postal sectors. This follows the termination of the short-lived National State of Disaster over electricity on 05 April. The committee will assess the effects of Eskom load-shedding on the ICT sector and work with stakeholders to identify possible regulatory interventions within Icasa's purview.

South Africa's PIC talks to Axian, Maseko's Afrifund on acquiring Telkom stake - report

South Africa's Public Investment Corporation is backing a possible bid led by the former Telkom CEO for a 35 percent stake in the operator, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The PIC, which manages more than ZAR 2.5 trillion in assets, is in talks to team up with Sipho Maseko's investment vehicle Afrifund and Axian Telecom in a potential offer for the stake in partly state-owned Telkom, said the sources, who asked not to be identified.

Corridor Africa Technologies takes steps to curb infrastructure theft and damage

South African telecoms services provider Corridor Africa Technologies said it has taken steps to combat infrastructure theft and vandalism. Recent events include damage to 900 mobile towers during floods in KwaZulu-Natal, the vandalism of over 100 towers during unrest in 2021 and the collapse of a powerline owing to vandalism in Tshwane in April. The measures include increased security, collaboration with law enforcement agencies, public awareness campaigns and partnerships with local authorities.

Vumatel blames vandalism and load-shedding for outages around Johannesburg

South African fibre network operator Vumatel has blamed a recent spate of network outages around the Johannesburg areas on several factors, including vandalism and load-shedding, ITWeb reported. It admitted to a larger number of unplanned and repetitive outages in November and December 2022 around Gauteng, but said that planned and unplanned outages at a national level have not escalated recently.

South African telecom firms say load shedding is crippling sector

South Africa's recently formed Association of Communications & Technology (ACT) has warned that extreme load shedding is having a severe effect on the telecoms sector and consumers, TechCentral reported. ACT chairman and Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub said the protracted and more frequent power cuts are having a significantly negative impact. The private sector needs to work with the government to "find solutions to South Africa's national power crisis".

MTN South Africa starts 'crowd sourcing' project to counter power cuts

MTN South Africa said it has asked small businesses with additional generation capacity to join forces in a crowd-sourcing initiative to further bolster MTN's network resilience, as rolling daily power cuts continue. The focus of the initiative has been to find some positive aspect to the power crisis, by bringing small businesses closer to MTN. Two businesses, namely 24Solutions and Samo Engineering, have stepped up and are now working with MTN as supply partners to provide additional generator capacity.
