South Korea to test mmWave 5G services in Seoul subways

South Korea's ICT Ministry has announced plans to work with domestic telecom operators to test mmWave 5G services in the Seoul subway system, Yonhap news agency reports. The Ministry, in partnership with SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, as well as Seoul Metro, will deploy a backhaul network based on mmWave 5G for Wi-Fi across the Seoul subway system.

The operators will test the service across a 5.4-kilometer section on Line 2 from Sinseoldong Station to Seongsu Station, using network equipment from Samsung Electronics.

South Korea plans to expand 5G services coverage across the entire country by end-2022. South Korean operators commercially launched 5G services in April 2019.

Around 71 percent of South Korean mobile users are still using 4G networks, while 21 percent have already adopted 5G services.
