Spain hit by record 120,000 cyber incidents in 2017

Friday 12 January 2018 | 11:05 CET | News

Spain was impacted by over 120,000 cyber-incidents in 2017, up from 115,000 in 2016 and just 18,000 in 2014, reports EFE, citing national institute for cybersecurity (INCIBE) director Alberto Hernandez. The majority of the cyberattacks were economically motivated but the scale of the threat is still primarily due to the lack of protection of IT systems, said Hernandez, adding that the virus with the highest impact in Spain last year was developed back in 2007. The INCIBE director also pointed out that the higher cyber-incidents figures were in part due to the institute's improved detection capacity.
