Spanish regulator cuts mobile termination fees to EUR 0.07
Spanish telecommunications regulator CMT has announced the conclusion of its initial glide path for mobile termination rates begun in September 2006. It has now lowered the fee to a single price of EUR 0.07 per minute for Telefonica Moviles Spain (Movistar), Vodafone Spain and Orange Spain from 16 April. The same rate applies to MVNOs using their networks. Since October 2008, the three mobile operators' rates were EUR 0.783, EUR 0.0787 and EUR 0.0803, respectively. The only exception to CMT's ruling is relatively recent market entrant Yoigo, which will maintain its call termination fee of EUR 0.10, as it launched operations in an already mature market and has higher costs compared to its competitors, the regulator said. The EUR 0.07 and EUR 0.10 call termination fees are valid until 16 October, when the regulator is expected to further reduce these charges. A new glide path will be announced before the end of July.
