Sprint to deploy Alcatel-Lucent Metro Cells
US operator Sprint announced an agreement to deploy Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio Metro Cells, mini base stations that can support indoor, outdoor, urban hotspot and rural applications to provide enhanced broadband capacity for high-traffic areas. Sprint's initial deployment will focus on indoor areas including entertainment venues, transportation hubs and business campuses.

UAE operator Etisalat has completed a technology trial with the Alcatel-Lucent lightRadio portfolio. Is Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio a silver bullet for mobile networks?

Alcatel-Lucent has announced a new architecture for mobile networks. The new lightRadio portfolio claims to save mobile operators up to 50 percent on the total cost of ownership and energy use. It also offers an answer to the high growth in mobile data traffic. LightRadio was developed by Bell Labs (Alcatel-Lucent's R&D arm) together with Freescale (system-on-a-chip, SoC), HP (controllers and gateways) and operators (China Mobile is interested in a field trial).
