Swedish communications regulator PTS has announced the award of SEK 106 million in subsidies to 44 broadband projects in Blekinge, Varmland, Vasternorrland and Vastra Gotaland, with more awards to come in November. The watchdog has SEK 136 million altogether to allocate in 2020 and is targeting sparsely populated areas that it considers are not commercially viable for broadband construction within the next three years.
Maria Sorman, head of broadband subsidies at PTS, said the watchdog was pleased to be able to start providing finance to network developers and that the funding will help the government to achieve its broadband strategy.
For 2021, the Swedish government is proposing to provide another SEK 1.40 billion in subsidies for broadband. Altogether, SEK 2.85 billion will be allocated by 2025.
