Swiss govt proposes increase in universal service broadband speed to 80 Mbps

The Swiss Federal Council plans to improve internet speeds under the universal service legislation to a minimum 80/8 Mbps for download/upload from 2024. The current minimum speed offered is 10/1 Mbps. The increase in internet speed would be part of a wider reform of the universal service regulation, as called for by parliament and the cantons, to ensure national coverage of fast broadband.

The government has opened a consultation process to review the rules, which will run until March next year. A revision of the Ordinance on Telecommunications Services is necessary to change the rules on universal telecommunications services. These are currently provided by Swisscom, which has also had its concession extended by one year while the reform is completed.
