
T-Mobile US added a record number of postpaid customers in 2020 and said that coverage of its Ultra Capacity 5G speeds (2.5 GHz) expanded to 106 million people, passing its goal of 100 million by year-end. The company’s entire 5G network is accessible to 280 million, with nationwide coverage expected for the end of this year.
Preliminary figures for the full year show 5.6 million net customer additions, including 5.5 million postpaid and 2.2 million postpaid phone customers added. For the fourth quarter, total net additions went to 1.7 million, including 1.6 million postpaid and 824,000 postpaid phone. This means T-Mobile came in just ahead of its guidance for 1.3-1.4 million postpaid phone additions in H2, with a total of 1.51 million added.
The company finished 2020 with a total of 102.1 million customers, also a record.
Postpaid other net customer additions went to 794,000 in Q4 and 3.3 million for 2020, also the highest annual number in company history. Meanwhile, prepaid net customer additions amounted to 84,000 and 145,000 respectively. Postpaid phone churn amounted to 1.03 percent in Q4 and 0.90 for 2020, with prepaid churn at 2.92 percent and 3.03 percent respectively.
T-Mobile's Ultra Capacity 5G network is available in over 1,000 cities and towns across the country including Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. The network can deliver download speeds in the 300 Mbps range and peak speeds hitting 1 Gbps on compatible 5G devices.
