T-Mobile US confirms systems hack

T-Mobile US confirmed hackers gained access to some data in its systems. However, it said it had not yet determined that there is any personal customer data involved.

It added it closed the entry point used to gain access to its systems, and it's continuing its deep technical review of the situation across its systems to identify the nature of any data that was illegally accessed.

The investigation will take some time but the company said it's working with the highest degree of urgency. Until it completed this assessment, it cannot confirm the reported number of records affected or the validity of statements made by others. The company added it will proactively communicate with its customers and other stakeholders once it has a more complete and verified understanding of what occurred.

The move comes after Motherboard online forum reported that T-Mobile was investigating a post on an underground forum offering for sale Social Security Numbers and other private data. The forum post at the time didn't name T-Mobile, but the seller told Motherboard the data came from T-Mobile servers.
