T-Mobile US launches RCS-based messaging

T-Mobile US has launched T-Mobile Advanced Messaging, based on the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard. The technology enables rich one-on-one and group messaging, including near real-time chat. Users can see when others are typing, when their message is delivered and when it is read. They can also use T-Mobile Advanced Messaging to share high-resolution photos and videos up to 10 MB. The new messaging system is built to work across all devices, makers, operating systems and wireless operators. The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime smartphone, available now in T-Mobile stores and online, is the first device to come with T-Mobile Advanced messaging. The operator will offer a software update to install it on the Galaxy S5 and S6. Nearly a dozen more devices will come with the feature by the end of the year.

CTO Neville Ray writes in a blog post, “For over a decade, while consumer tech companies like Facebook, Skype and Snapchat have been rolling out cool new messaging features and functions, US wireless operators have made virtually zero advances in the messaging tech that comes built in to most phones.” He adds, “With T-Mobile Advanced Messaging, you won’t need to search out, download, install, setup and register an extra app to get all that and more. It just works. Right out of the box. And, even more important, because Advanced Messaging is built on the RCS standard, in the future, your real-time chats won’t be held inside a single app or platform ecosystem.”
