Tata withdraws application to bid for CDMA airwaves
Indian operator Tata Teleservices (TTSL) has withdrawn its application to bid for CDMA spectrum, a move that will force the government to cancel the spectrum sale on this technology platform, reports The Economic Times. Tata Teleservices had earlier indicated that it plans to bid for airwaves in the 800 MHz band in North-East, Assam and Jammu and Kashmir circles, after it lost its permits in these three regions when the Supreme Court quashed 122 licences in February issued by former telecoms minister A Raja. Videocon has also withdrawn from the proposed auction, leaving no applicants for the spectrum. Executives close to the Tatas said the company was of the view that it it was not viable to secure CDMA airwaves in the three regions at the current reserve price. These are perpetually loss-making circles, and there is no business case. The company is also banking on its petition in the Supreme Court against its licence cancellation in these three circles, said an executive aware of the development.
