Telecom Egypt launches mobile network under 'We' name

Telecom Egypt has officially launched ‘We’, the country’s long-awaited fourth mobile network. The prepaid cards will be available by 15 October, the company announced at the opening of its first customer service centre, Ahram reported online. 

TE will offer 2G, 3G and 4G services to start, using its own network and roaming agreements with Etisalat and Orange. It was awarded its first mobile licence last year, allowing the fixed incumbent to expand as the fourth operator in the country. All four mobile operators are expected to activate 4G services this month. 

The mobile internet service provided by We will cost EGP 10 for 1GB, EGP 20 for 2.5GB, EGP 40 for 6GB, EGP 100 for 18GB and EGP 200 for 40GB. Its standard prepaid rate will be EGP 0.12 per minute, MB or SMS. Customers can also buy prepaid bundles of interchangeable units, for EGP 20 for 1,600 units or EGP 40 for 4,000 units. A unit is worth one minute, SMS or MB.

Telecom Egypt launches We Internet fixed service at up to 100 Mbps

Telecom Egypt has launched We Internet, a revamped version of its fixed broadband service. Subscribers can now get service at up to 100 Mbps instead of the old maximum of 16 Mbps. The entry-level product has been upgraded from 1 Mbps to 5 Mbps and more than 50 percent of its customers are now connected to fibre to the kerb, with the ability to upgrade to the new minimum speed.

Telecom Egypt says no immediate plans to sell stake in Vodafone

Telecom Egypt said it has no immediate plans to sell its stake in Vodafone Egypt and will focus on growing its share of the mobile market to as much as 15 percent by 2022, Bloomberg reported citing the company's senior investor relations director. The decision to keep or sell its 45 percent stake in Vodafone Egypt cannot be made "blindly", Sarah Shabayek told the agency.

Telecom Egypt's BoD approves 2018 budget, plans more mobile investment

Telecom Egypt's board of directors approved the company's budget for the fiscal year 2018. Total revenue growth is expected to be in the range of high single digit to low double digit, the EBITDA margin is forecast in the mid to high twenties, and capital expenditure will reach 30 percent of revenues. The company said it expects to continue posting strong operational margins and that it will continue to invest in its mobile network launched last year.

Telecom Egypt 9-month revenue up 37% to EGP 13.26 bln

Telecom Egypt's revenues increased by 37 percent to EGP 13.26 billion for the nine months ended 30 September compared with EGP 9.66 billion in the same period in 2016 on higher wholesale revenue mainly resulting from the devaluation of the EGP against the USD. Normalizing for the foreign exchange impact, revenue would have still shown double digit growth of 11 percent year-on-year, boosted by a 24 percent growth in retail revenue.  EBITDA grew 32 percent to EGP 3.92 billion, delivering a margin of 30 percen

Telecom Egypt renews international wholesale service deal with Vodafone

Telecom Egypt has announced the renewal of its long-term agreement with Vodafone Egypt, to provide international call conveyance services. The agreement, which took effect from September, extends to year-end 2022. It is expected to represent a total value for Telecom Egypt of approximately EGP 12 billion throughout the agreement term.

Telecom Egypt adds 22,000 fixed line customers in August

Telecom Egypt added 22,100 new customers to its fixed-line services in August, the Daily News reported, citing a report by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The number increased from 6.25 million customers in July to 6.27 million in August. However, this is down from 6.29 million in June, which means that TE has lost about 18,900 customers since then.

Egyptian treasury collects over USD 1.1 bln through 4G licences

Egypt's four mobile operators, who have been granted 4G licences by the government, have contributed over USD 1.1 billion to the national fiscus, ITWeb reported citing the ICT ministry. The ministry says it was able to amass more than USD 1.1 billion as well as additional EGP 10 billion from agreements concluded with Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, Etisalat Egypt and Telecom Egypt.

Bee supplies TE with self-payment machines

Egypt's Bee Electronic Payments says it has provided self-payment machines to Telecom Egypt (TE) in the first phase of a trial through which bills and mobile credit can be paid directly. Each machine was has an outlet to deposit cash without the need to queue or deal with staff, reports the Daily News. The self-payment machines are being supplied to main telecommunication centres of TE.

Vodafone Egypt criticises NTRA for imposing pre-paid card price increases

Vodafone Egypt says the increase in prices of prepaid top-up cards approved by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) may affect customer consumption, the Daily News reported. Ayman Essam, head of the legal and external affairs, said market studies have to wait for a full month to measure the impact on consumption patterns. He noted that the current increase policies were not approved by mobile operators, but imposed by NTRA.

Orange Egypt launches 4G with quadruple data offer

Orange Egypt has announced the launch of 4G services after officially receiving its frequencies from the government, under the slogan "4G for Everyone". Orange is running a promotion, with customers able to receive four times the data they consumed the day before. The offer is free of charge, and customers only need to dial hash 4 hash or subscribe via its website. Customers will get a bonus of 500 MB when replacing their SIM card by a 4G SIM.

Egyptian 4G services formally begin on 28 September

Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat and Telecom Egypt's We are set to begin commercial operation of 4G services on 28 September, Daily News reported citing an official at the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA). A source at Etisalat Egypt said that 4G services have already been working and that the launch on 28 September is only the commercial inauguration.
