Telecom NZ, Huawei launch joint innovation programme
Telecom New Zealand and Chinese telecommunications equipment vendor Huawei have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint innovation programme. The programme will operate under a shared management structure, headed by two executive sponsors, David Havercroft, Telecom chief operating officer, and David Wang, president of Huawei Wireless. Senior staff from Huawei and Telecom will form a steering committee and meet regularly to appoint project teams as required.

Huawei says govts never asked for personal data

Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei Technology has said it has never been asked to provide information on citizens to a government, the Shanghai Daily reports. In a report, the company said: "We have never been asked to provide access to our technology, or provide any data or information on any citizen or organization to any government." The report also calls on companies and regulators to cooperate on global standards and called on consumers to pressure equipment makers to improve security.

Telecom sees mobile data usage surge 91%

Telecom New Zealand has published its first of a regular report on data use trends. Data usage over the Telecom mobile network continues to grow rapidly, rising 91 percent over the last year as smartphone ownership rises. Telecom New Zealand plans to rapidly expand and commercialise its national Wi-Fi network at public phone booths. Telecom NZ may delay 4G launch

Telecom New Zealand will likely delay the launch of its LTE mobile broadband service but availability at launch will be wider. In April, Telecom said it planned to have 4G available on two-thirds of its Auckland network by October and in 60 percent of Wellington and Christchurch in December.
