Telefonica acquires Spanish engineering firm Geprom

Telefonica has announced the acquisition of Spanish engineering company Geprom, specialising in industrial automation processes, which will be integrated into the operator’s Telefonica Tech unit. The aim is to strengthen the capabilities of Telefonica Tech’s Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data division, led by Gonzalo Martin-Villa, and enhance the company's capabilities in the Industry 4.0 sector, said Telefonica, without disclosing further details of the transaction.

Telefonica and Geprom have collaborated closely in recent years to offer new industrial digitalisation solutions in Spain, above all in the digital transformation of existing factory production processes. Geprom employs over 40 professionals and has a large network of partners and top-tier customers for which it offers turnkey projects in the areas of planning, production, quality control, logistics and specialised maintenance.

The operator added that the digital development of the industrial sector is one of Telefonica Tech's priority business lines, its portfolio already including high value-added products and services covering the sensorisation and analysis of data to create fully connected factories, as well as the application of cloud technologies, artificial intelligence and cyber security services to help companies become more efficient, competitive and sustainable.

Earlier this year, Telefonica acquired British IT services provider Cancom for an enterprise value of EUR 398 million, subsequently renaming it Telefonica Tech UK&I. It also integrated Spanish cloud specialists Altostratus and Acens into Telefonica Tech.

The unit, which comprises the operator’s Cybersecurity & Cloud and Big Data & IoT businesses, reported revenues of EUR 229 million in the third quarter of 2021, up 24.9 percent year on year.
