Telefonica awarded Chile's CLP 6 bln Tarapaca fibre contract

Chilean telecommunications regulator Subtel said Movistar (Telefonica) has been awarded the project to roll out 847 kilometres of fibre-optic cables in the northern region of Tarapaca, ahead of rival bidder WOM. The Fibra Optica Tarapaca (FOT) project will be subsidised with CLP 5.86 billion of funds from the government with a view to further closing the country’s digital divide by bringing high-speed broadband services to 7 communes in the region, including remote areas such as Pisagua or San Marcos, by 2024.

The 15 localities to receive fibre infrastructure by the delivery deadline of 2024 are Iquique, Chanavayita, San Marcos, Caleta Chipana, Pozo Almonte, Lagunas, Mamina, Huatacondo, Camina, Colchane, Huara, Zapiga, Pisagua, Sibaya and Pica. A total of 120,000 inhabitants in the localities will eventually be able to access the network, added the watchdog.

The Fibra Optica Tarapaca (FOT) system is a separate development from Chile’s nationwide Fibra Optica Nacional (FON) project and the Fibra Optica Austral (FOA) southern fibre plan. In total, some 15,029 kilometres of fibre will be deployed, doubling the extension of the country’s footprint.
