Telefonica, Disney unveil new Movistar Disney channel

Telefonica has again teamed up with Disney to launch a dedicated channel with movies and exclusive content on the operator’s Movistar+ pay-TV service in Spain. The Movistar Disney channel will launch on 22 December and feature classic and new movies from the US studio and its subsidiaries Pixar and Marvel, including themed days such as a Disney princesses day on 24 December and a Disney classics day on Christmas Day. The new channel is available at no extra charge for all subscribers to the operator’s Movistar Cine package.

The partners also announced that a Movistar Star Wars pop-up channel will be broadcast on dial 30 of the Movistar+ platform from 01 to 17 December to coincide with the release of 'Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi'. The channel will air the first movies of the franchise plus additional content.

Telefonica has confirmed that it will be offering an exclusive Christmas-themed pop-up channel on its Movistar+ IPTV platform later this month following the temporary Halloween channel that ceased broadcasting on 25 November. The 'Movistar Navidad Disney' channel will be available free of charge on Dial 29 to all Movistar+ subscribers via fibre and ADSL starting on 20 December and will air a selection of classic horror and action films including Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas, The Nightmare Before Christmas

Telefonica to launch Movistar Oscars pop-up channel

Telefonica has announced that it will be offering an exclusive Oscars-themed pop-up channel on its Movistar+ IPTV platform later this month. The 'Movistar Oscars' channel will be available on dial no. 29 of Movistar+ from 20 February to 05 March to coincide with the 90th edition of the Academy Awards. The channel will air 30 previous Oscar winners live and on demand in HD and SD as well as the ceremony itself on 04 March.

Telefonica, Disney announce Movistar Disney channel programming

Telefonica and Disney have announced the programming of their new joint channel ahead of its launch on the operator's Movistar+ pay-TV service in Spain on 22 December. The Movistar Disney channel will feature classic and new movies from the US studio and its subsidiaries Pixar and Marvel, starting off with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Lion King, Finding Nemo, Frozen, Tarzan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Fantasia 2000. Over the festive season, the channel will also broadcast the Toy Story trilogy

Netflix hits 1 million users in Spain - study

Netflix reached the milestone of 1 million subscribers in Spain in the second quarter of 2017 after once again doubling its customer base in the first 6 months of the year, according to the latest consumer household survey conducted by communications regulator CNMC. A total of 1.16 million homes throughout the country had subscribed to the video streaming service at the end of June, equivalent to 7.3 percent of internet households, up from 3.4 percent at the end of 2016.

Telefonica slashes price of Fusion entertainment plan

Telefonica has launched a new promotion to entice new customers to sign up to its Movistar Fusion Ocio entertainment-based convergent package. New or existing Telefonica customers can now subscribe to Fusion Ocio for half the standard monthly price of EUR 75 (50Mbps connection) or EUR 90 (300Mbps connection) during the first six months.

Telefonica, Film Factory sign international Movistar+ distribution deal

Telefonica has announced that its Movistar+ pay-TV unit has signed an agreement with Film Factory Entertainment, the largest film sales agent in the Spanish-speaking world, for the global distribution of two of the company's first original series: the comedies 'Spanish shame' and 'Look what you've done'. The agreement includes the commercialisation of both titles for all territories worldwide excluding Spain and Latin America.

Telefonica is considering launching an OTT video streaming service outside its home market in Europe, in order to monetize its growing audiovisual production, El Pais reports. Spain's Movistar+ to air BBC's Blue Planet II exclusively

Telefonica has announced that it will exclusively broadcast the BBC's new Blue Planet II documentary on the canal #0 network of its Movistar+ pay-TV platform in Spain as part of a new two-year content deal with BBC Worldwide. Under the terms of the agreement, all new BBC Earth productions will be premiered on #0, including Dynasty, Mountains, Spy in the Wild, The Human Body and Rituals. Telefonica to offer Movistar+ content on YouTube

Telefonica has started offering selected content from its Movistar+ pay-TV channels in Spain on YouTube for viewers to watch on the move for free. The operator announced in a blog post that clips from its Movistar+, Movistar eSports and entertainment-based #0 channels will be available to stream alongside popular programmes such as Late Motiv, El Dia Despues, Ilustres Ignorantes and Fiebre Maldini. The #0 channel was launched in December 2015 to replace Canal+, Spain's pioneering pay-TV channel.

Movistar+ app updated to act as TV remote

Telefonica has updated its Movistar+ multi-device app to allow pay-TV subscribers to use their smartphones and tablets as a remote control. Users simply have to tap an icon on the top right of the app to convert their device into a remote control for the decoder, with all the buttons normally found on a physical remote control, including channel selection, volume as well as the ability to stop and resume playback, rewind or fast-forward programmes, record content and select favourites, among other features.
