Telefonica, Mediapro reach EUR 2.4 bln football rights deal

Telefonica has reached a deal to acquire Mediapro's rights to broadcast Spain’s top-tier La Liga football league and domestic cup competition (Copa del Rey) over the next three seasons, plus the UEFA Champions League and Europa League over the next two seasons, for a total of EUR 2.4 billion. In a statement to Spain's market regulator CNMV, Telefonica confirmed that its DTS unit, which had already been awarded the rights to some La Liga games in a recent auction, will now add Mediapro’s BeIN Sports channel to its Movistar+ pay-TV service.

Under the terms of the deal, Telefonica will broadcast matches from the Spanish first division and second division for three seasons starting in 2016-2017, plus the European Champions and UEFA leagues starting immediately and continuing through the 2017-2018 season. The La Liga deal includes the right to broadcast eight games every match day, including all the games featuring Real Madrid and Barcelona.
