
Telefonica sets up venture capital management subsidiary

Telefonica has set up a unit called Telefonica Digital Venture Capital. The subsidiary will be headquartered in Spain, and will be in charge of managing Telefonica Group's venture capital business and activities worldwide. Telefonica Digital Venture Capital is a unit of Telefonica Digital Holdings, Cinco Dias reports. The Telefonica Digital Venture Capital board includes Carlos Domingo (president of the opearotr's research and development arm, Telefonica I+D), David Giner (head of business & legal affairs at Telefonica Digital) and Antonio Marti Ciruelos (CFO of Telefonica Digital). In March, Telefonica invested in mobile payments specialist Boku. Boku then secured USD 35 million in funding from New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Telefonica Digital and previous investors. Back in January this year, Telefonica also invested in cloud computing software and services provider Joyent. In November 2011, Telefonica made an equity investment in Wi-Fi video networking chips manufacturer Quantenna Communications. Other Telefonica investments include GestureTek, Loomia, Eventful, Assia, Kyte and Amobee.
