Telefonica to close 1,200 ADSL exchanges by 2024

Thursday 16 May 2019 | 10:37 CET | News
Spain's communications regulator CNMC has announced that Telefonica has notified it of plans to close over 1,200 of its ADSL exchanges by 2024, up from the previous figure of 653 by 2020. The company has accelerated plans to shut down copper plants that are no longer in use due to the rapid expansion of its FTTH network. Last year it closed 140 plants under the so-called FARO project, with the new fibre-optic networks taking up less than 15 percent of the space of a copper access and using up 60 percent less energy.

Telefonica is only permitted to shut down a central exchange when 25 percent of customers in the area served by the facilities have alternative means of accessing the network, such as via FTTH technology, and alternative operators no longer use the plant's copper network. The company has the largest FTTH network in Europe, reaching 21.3 million premises on 31 December.
