Telefonica has announced the launch of a new Big Data unit called LUCA, offering a portfolio of services to cover the data management needs of large companies. The company said the new unit will offer what it calls a Big Data-as-a-Service (BDaaS) solution, enabling its corporate clients to understand their data and encourage its transparent and responsible use so that they may benefit from the opportunity it presents. "Big Data has helped us at Telefonica, and we strongly believe it will help our clients in decision-making, more efficient resource management and in returning the benefits of this wealth of information not only to their clients and direct users, but also to society,” said the company’s chief data officer Chema Alonso.
The new unit will be led by global big data B2B director Elena Gil and have three main lines of products and services: Business Insights, including existing services such as Smart Steps, focused on areas such as the optimisation of transport networks and tourist management in cities, analytical and external consultancy services for national and international clients, which will be provided by Synergic Partners, and the BDaaS section to empower clients to get the most out of their own data, using the Telefonica cloud infrastructure.
The company said the catalogue of products and services of LUCA will be taken to market by the different business units in the countries in which Telefonica is present, with the units also using their own local capabilities internally to service their customers.
