Telekom Austria is negotiating with unions and works councils about a social plan for up to 1,000 employees this year, mostly working at its fixed network division, according to Austrian newspaper Die Presse, citing company sources. The operator needs to cut jobs as its fixed network division is losing customers and it plans to deploy an all-IP network during the coming years, which needs fewer employees to maintain. A plan to set up a so-called civil servants pool for Telekom Austria and Austrian postal employees has been put on ice, as the Austrian government was disbanded last week, so the operator is seeking other ways to cut its workforce. The plan foresees up to 1,000 job cuts this year and between 500 and 700 job cuts for 2009.
