Telenor appoints new CEOs of Dtac, Digi

Telenor Group has appointed new chief executive officers of its dtac unit in Thailand and Digi subsidiary in Malaysia, effective 1 April. Lars-Ake Norling, currently CEO of Digi will take over the position of CEO of Thai mobile operator Total Access Communication (dtac). Albern Murty, currently chief operating officer of Malaysian mobile operator Digi, will assume the position of company CEO.

Sigve Brekke will step down as interim CEO at Dtac and return to focusing on his role as EVP and head of region Asia, Telenor Group. He continues to serve as vice-chairman of Dtac's board of directors.

Norling joined Digi as CEO in August 2014. Previous to Digi, he was CEO of Telenor Sweden from 2009 to 2014. He has also held a number of executive positions in the fixed broadband provider Bredbandsbolaget in Sweden, as well as in Ericsson.

Murty has spent the last 13 years in a variety of senior executive roles in Digi. In January 2014, he became the company's COO after serving as CMO for a number of years. Before Digi, he held business and commercial management roles at Lucent Technologies across the Asian region.

Dtac CEO Norling to leave Telenor group

Telenor's Thai subsidiary Total Access Communication (Dtac) announced that its CEO Lars-Ake Norling has decided to leave the company to pursue new opportunities. Dtac has already started the process of appointing a new CEO. Norling will remain in his current role until 1 September, or until a successor has been appointed. Effective immediately, Norling will also step down from Telenor Group Executive Management, including his role as Cluster Head for Developed Asia.

Digi appoints Norling as chairman

Malaysia operator Digi Telecommunications has appointed Lars-Ake Norling as chairman of its board of directors, effective immediately. Norling succeeds Morten Karlsen Sorby, who has served as Digi's chairman since August 2015. Norling is currently Telenor Groups' EVP for Developed Asia Cluster, and Director and CEO of Total Access Communication Public Company (Dtac) in Thailand.

Telenor CEO denies lying about education on CV

Telenor CEO Sigve Brekke has denied lying on his curriculum vitae (CV) about his qualifications, according to newspaper Verdens Gang on its website. He said he has never deliberately misled about his academic background, but that he had failed to notice an incorrect translation of his educational achievements from Norwegian to English, which he said he regretted.

Norway govt hints Telenor should consider naming woman CEO

Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Monica Maeland said Telenor should pay special consideration to women when it chooses a successor to CEO Fredrik Baksaas, said VG Nett, the website of newspaper Verdens Gang. The Norwegian government owns 54 percent of the telecommunications operator. VG said the favourite internal candidate is Sigve Brekke, the man leading Telenor's Asian operations. VG claimed that Maeland had given a clear signal on the matter.

Telenor Group aims to raise data roaming to 80% by end-2017

Telenor Group said it is launching a retail roaming initiative to be introduced gradually across the group, starting with Europe in 2015. Jon Fredrik Baksaas, president and CEO of the Telenor Group, told the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona that there should be no reason for Telenor subscribers not to use mobile data services even when they are abroad. The group aims to increase data roaming usage to at least 80 percent by the end of 2017.
